ในวันที่ 1 กันยายน 2564 เป็นวันสืบนาคะเสถียร (https://www.zernzab.com/Guestpost/) มาถึงปีนี้เขาจากไปครบ 31 ปีแล้ว แต่ยังเป็นที่จดจำของผู้คน โดยเฉพาะคนที่รักและหวงแหนทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ ป่าไม้ สัตว์ป่า
'สืบ นาคะเสถียร' ฝากคำพูดอันเป็นวาทะที่ทรงพลังไว้ว่า "ผมขอพูดในนามของสัตว์ป่าทุกตัว เพราะพวกเขาพูดเพื่อตัวเองไม่ได้"
วาทะนี้มีที่มาจากประสบการณ์แห่งการสูญเสียของการอพยพสัตว์ป่าที่เขื่อนเชี่ยวหลาน จนทำให้สืบกระโดดเข้าร่วมเวทีคัดค้านการก่อสร้างเขื่อนน้ำโจนในเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าทุ่งใหญ่นเรศวร
แม้ภารกิจจะไม่ได้ข้องเกี่ยวกับสัตว์ป่าโดยตรง แต่บทเรียนความล้มเหลวของภารกิจช่วยเหลือสัตว์ป่าที่ไม่อาจช่วยเหลือสัตว์ป่าได้ทั้งหมด ทำให้สืบให้ความสำคัญกับการร่วมปกป้องป่าใหญ่ผืนนี้ ทั้งเร่งทำรายงานการช่วยเหลือสัตว์ป่าตกค้างเขื่อนเชี่ยวหลาน ในที่สุดได้กลายเป็นตัวแปรสำคัญ เพราะเป็นหลักฐานทางวิชาการและวิทยาศาสตร์ ในการคัดค้านการสร้างเขื่อนน้ำโจน และชะลอโครงการออกไปได้สำเร็จ
