ผู้ติดเชื้อรายใหม่ที่พบส่วนใหญ่อาศัยอยู่ใน "ออกแลนด์" เมืองใหญ่ที่สุดของประเทศบนเกาะเหนือซึ่งใช้มาตรการล็อกดาวน์มานานกว่า 2 เดือนแล้ว
ส่วนที่เกาะใต้ พบผู้ติดเชื้อใหม่ 1 รายในเมืองเบลเนม (Blenheim) ทางภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของเกาะ โดยเจ้าหน้าที่สาธารณสุขระบุว่า โอกาสที่เชื้อจะแพร่กระจายสู่ชุมชนมีค่อนข้างต่ำ และผู้ป่วยรายนี้อยู่ในระยะสุดท้ายของการติดเชื้อแล้ว
"จากการตรวจสอบพบว่า เคสนี้มีผู้สัมผัสใกล้ชิดน้อย และทุกคนได้รับการติดต่อและทำการแยกตรวจโรคทั้งหมดแล้ว" กระทรวงสาธารณสุขนิวซีแลนด์แถลง
นายกรัฐมนตรี จาซินดา อาร์เดิร์น ประกาศวานนี้ (22) ว่านิวซีแลนด์จะเลิกใช้มาตรการล็อกดาวน์เข้มงวด และอนุญาตให้ประชาชนกลับมาใช้ชีวิตได้อย่างอิสระก็ต่อเมื่อประชากรที่เข้าเกณฑ์ฉีดวัคซีนครบโดสเกิน 90% ซึ่งจากข้อมูล ณ วันนี้ (23) พบว่าสัดส่วนผู้ที่ฉีดวัคซีนครบโดสยังอยู่แค่ 70%
นิวซีแลนด์เคยได้รับเสียงชื่นชมจากทั่วโลกว่ามีมาตรการคุมโควิด-19 ที่ดีเยี่ยม ทว่าล่าสุดยังไม่สามารถยุติการแพร่ระบาดของเชื้อสายพันธุ์ "เดลตา" ในเมืองออกแลนด์ได้ ซึ่งทำให้นายกฯ อาร์เดิร์น ต้องยอมละทิ้งนโยบาย "คุมโควิดให้เป็นศูนย์" และปรับมาสู่การ "ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ร่วมกับไวรัส"
นิวซีแลนด์มีผู้ติดเชื้อสะสมจากการระบาดระลอกปัจจุบัน 2,492 ราย ขณะที่ยอดผู้เสียชีวิตจากโควิด-19 นับตั้งแต่มีการระบาดครั้งแรกอยู่ที่ 28 ราย
